Meet Cheryl Chia

The Brain Fitness Expert

With more than 20 years’ experience in brain fitness training, Cheryl is an accomplished paediatric physiotherapist, who is also the founder of BrainFit, an entity that specialises in scientific brain fitness training for children. Cheryl holds a Master Degree in Physiotherapy Studies (Paediatrics) from the University of Queensland, Australia. She was awarded a full scholarship from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and was subsequently conferred membership in the Golden Key National Honour Society in recognition of her outstanding scholastic achievement and excellence.

Cheryl has a keen interest in neuroscience and brain research on learning skills. She was a lecturer at Nanyang Polytechnic and is also a much sought-after speaker. In Singapore, she has been invited to speak at events organised by The Head Foundation, MediaCorp-SMART Parents, The Child Guidance Clinic and schools. She is also a frequent invited guest on Parenting Made Easy Radio 93.8, where she shares her expertise on brain fitness to help parents raise smarter and more resilient children.

Cheryl’s talk was a real eye-opener. The seminar series not only gave me insight into my child’s behaviour and challenges, it also helped me to empathise with his experiences of the world in a way I probably never could have on my own. This precious insight has changed my relationship with my child and helped me become a better parent. More importantly, it has given me tools and tips to help him with his challenges.

Common Myths

This is a common concern among parents with children in school. In our world where constant distractions abound and boredom is a common complaint, the self-motivation and drive to learn, traits we yearn to see in our children, often seem like an elusive wish.

My child is simply uninterested in academics. He has the genes for sports, not studies.

It is true that many of us are born with natural areas of interest. However, what is not well known is that because our brain behaves much like a muscle, it can be shaped and strengthened. In the same way, interest need not be a “fixed” characteristic as it can be built using the correct methods. Join us to learn how to nurture stronger interest in learning in your child.

My child simply has a lazy brain. That’s just the way she is.

When we are lazy, it is usually task-specific, meaning a child may be lazy in doing her homework but is immediately energized when playing video games. Laziness involves many factors that result in a net negative experience between the child and the activity. When parents are able to shape the net result into a positive experience, laziness can be eradicated!.

Ms Chia is very knowledgeable in her field. After attending her talk last Sep 15, I immediately signed up for my first 2 children. They have benefited from the programme since. Now I am signing up for my 3rd child for the programme to brush up on her fundamentals.

What you can expect at the seminar?

If you are a parent with a child from birth to 18 years old, this is the seminar for you!

For a parent with a young child, gain insights into building the correct brain foundations so your child is naturally self-motivated and will not be uninterested towards learning.

For a parent with an older child, learn how to break “lazy” and “unmotivated” brain habits to restore your child’s motivation in learning.

  • The “sweet spot” of learning – make learning enjoyable

  • Conversations in the mind – how that may be killing your child’s motivation

  • No interest in books and reading – what parents can do

  • How you praise your child – what has that got to do with motivation?

  • How to trigger positive neurochemicals to build natural self-motivation

  • Mastery and confidence – critical keys to personal power

  • Goals and habits – building purposeful routines

Don’t miss this golden opportunity to ask Cheryl for her expert opinion on
any other brain-related parenting questions that you may have!

Cheryl is very knowledgeable in how the brain works in children. I like how she scaffolds the complicated jargon and explains it in simple words for the audience to understand the process in children, and even in grown-ups.

– Mdm Ting –
Mother of our BrainFit Junior and BrainFit® Scholar students (3 and 8 yrs old, respectively)

By the end of the seminar, you will be empowered with research-based parenting strategies to help develop enduring self-motivation in your baby, pre-schooler, child or teen.
